La Flor Dominicana (LFD) NAS Cigar Review
By ConnorLa Flor Dominicana (LFD) has been at the forefront of the cigar market for decades. LFD N.A.S has a unique look – the cigar has an unusual appearance (you can call that ugly) and got its name NAS meaning “nasty ass shit,” from that – let’s review it. The Cheroot cigar is packed with unique features. It was rolled without molds, giving its body an uneven shape, and is open on both ends.
LFD NAS Cigar Review
Bringing out the cigar from its box, I was in awe. I have heard quite a lot about the cigar, but nothing prepared me for what I was seeing. It was far from my expectation. I had prepared myself for something rough, but I got something rougher. The cigar body had rough edges, and the veins were visible. The wrapper was dark, more like a coffee bean, and its head tapered into a torpedo style. And oh my God! Who uses black text on a red background? Well, that was the band color. The band is black and red-hued with a black text reading LFD N.A.S.
Strength: Full
Country: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Pelo de Oro Dominican
Pre-light draw
The cigar was pre-cut and had notes of white and black pepper, earth, floral, and wood. I used a guillotine straight cutter to remove another ¼ of the head, to have a better draw. The notes of wood, earth, and white pepper were more prominent, with some added grass and leather.
Flavor Notes
The initial few puffs after lighting up were loaded with pepper; it was a spice bomb, true of the Dominican tobacco. My eyes teared up, and water dripped from my nose. I wouldn’t recommend this for a newbie because the nicotine rush was strong. It started right out as full-bodied. Cedar and sweet kicked in afterward, but still, the spices remained dominant.
The second third had a full course of flavor party. Nuttiness, sweetness, earthiness, bitterness, toastiness, creaminess, and the blast of pepper all filled the air. But this cigar keeps getting stronger!
My peppery experience lingered into the final third. We could as well name this piece “nasty ass spicy.” The harshness has reduced, but that spice said, “Hey, I ain’t going nowhere!”
Draw and Burn
The cigar had a good draw and burned evenly and well. A few touch-ups were required, and the greyish ash wasn’t flaky. The burn line was pretty straight.
Final Thoughts
I wouldn’t recommend this cigar to a novice. Not going to sugar-coat things; it is pretty harsh with a blast of pepper. However, the sweetness and toastiness in the second third came in as a surprise but blended well. The next time you see a Pelo de Oro Ligero puro, you should know what you are up for. If you are a cigar aficionado that needs a challenge, I’d recommend you pick this up.
