Brand History

Montecristo cigars have become one of the most sought-after names in premium tobacco, earning a reputation for exceptional consistency, refined blending, and timeless appeal. The brand takes its name from The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, a novel frequently read aloud by lectors to cigar rollers in Cuban factories during the 1930s. That literary tradition became part of the brand’s identity when Alonso Menéndez González and José Manuel García founded Montecristo in Cuba in 1935. Today, the non-Cuban portfolio continues that legacy with expertly crafted wrapper, binder, and filler tobaccos that deliver a smooth draw, even burn, and balanced tasting notes throughout every vitola.

Following the nationalization of the Cuban cigar industry in 1959, Alonso Menéndez González reestablished the Montecristo tradition outside Cuba, helping shape the Dominican-made brand now available in the United States.
