La Flor Dominicana Cabinet Maduro/Oscuro No 5 Review
By ConnorSometimes, it’s good to get out of the way, experiment, and try something entirely different from the normal. It may come with its price, but for La Flor Dominicana, it was a huge success. La Flor Dominicana Cabinet Maduro/Oscuro No 5 was a total deviation from the normal of LFD cigars. The cigar was sold in a cabinet of 50, bandless and dripping in oil. It was a limited-production cigar but gained a huge audience. Let’s review a masterpiece from one of our favorite cigar makers, Litto Gomez: La Flor Dominicana LFD Cabinet Maduro/Oscuro #5.
La Flor Dominicana Cabinet Maduro/Oscuro No 5 Review
When I read somewhere that LFD Cabinet #5 was practically dripping in oil, I thought it was an exaggeration. The cigar was oily, and I mean oily. The Maduro wrapper was really a beautiful piece to look at; dark brown and lush. It has little thin veins, its seams were little, and it had no areas of softness or hardness. Its body was smooth and glossy. It was from here that I started salivating. I just couldn’t wait.
Strength: Medium to full
Country: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf
The cold draw had notes of raisins, cedar, coffee bean, and cream. The foot had more of an earthy and leathery smell.
I used my double-blade guillotine cutter to chop off the head, and I could see that it was packed with fillers. Upon lighting, the initial aroma was sweet and creamy, although I had expected spices and pepper. Remember I said it has unusual features of LFD cigars? A few puffs into the smoking session, I can hardly differentiate one flavor from the other. It was complex from the start, but it didn’t overshadow the smoothness. I enjoyed the chemistry of the flavors.
The second third came a little bit too early. But here, our spice was showcased, but it wasn’t the typical spiciness of LFD. Coffee, turmeric, fruits, citrus, and leather, joined the flavor profile. The retrohale had more pepper. So far, the burn has been even, and the ash was not flaky.
The final third approached slowly. I made a few touch-ups and removed the ash. The flavor notes from the second third were still evident, but the strength is moving toward full. The spiciness has also leveled up. I looked at my hand, and it was filled with oil. The burn was fantastic, but the draw was a little too tight.
I checked my watch and an hour had gone by! I guess good times end too quickly. Throughout the review, the LFD Cabinet Maduro #5 had a perfect construction and beautiful appearance. The flavor notes were a bit complex but smooth, regardless. It’s a good cigar to relax after a long day at work.
