Davidoff Escurio Gran Perfecto & Robusto Review

By Mariana Heredia
Davidoff Escurio Gran Perfecto & Robusto Review

Davidoff is one of the oldest cigar brands in the world and the company is known for its excellent marketing. The company was founded by the Davidoff family, a family known to have a passion for cigars. The company was founded in 1911 in Europe, and it is now a part of the British American Tobacco group. Some of the most renowned cigars are Davidoff Escurio Gran Perfecto and Robusto, which will be discussed in this review.

Davidoff Escurio Gran Perfecto

Davidoff Escurio Gran Perfecto Review

  • Cigar Review: Davidoff Escurio
  • Country of Origin: Dominican Republic
  • Wrapper: Ecuador Habano
  • Binder: Brazil Cuba
  • Length: 5″
  • Ring Gauge: 50 x 61
  • Vitola: Perfecto (Gran Perfecto)

The Davidoff brand is built on a foundation of understated elegance. When set on a humidor shelf, the boxes are plain wood with a slide cover that does not do the cigars’ credit. A cigar of this class should be packaged in a highly glossy vessel, but that would detract from the cigar’s overall appearance. The Escurio has a black and silver primary band with an Escurio secondary band. In its role, the dark walnut brown wrapper is smooth. Scrutiny reveals a toothy cigar with a substantial weight and a well-balanced grip.

The cigar has notes of heavy molasses and raisins on the cold draw. Before lighting the tobacco, the cigar is all about the sweetness. The foot of the cigar seems like a doppelgänger of the cold draw, but it’s not a carbon replica.

The opening notes of the cigar serve up some of the raisin and molasses from the cold pull once lighted, although they are more in the background of this Davidoff perfecto. The cigar’s major notes are licorice and wood, which compete for dominance. The cigar’s retrohale reveals more licorice and a hint of dirt.

Davidoff Escurio Petit Robusto open

Davidoff Escurio Robusto Review

  • Cigar Review: Davidoff Escurio
  • Size: 4.5 x 54 (Robusto)
  • Wrapper: Ecuador Habano
  • Binder: Brazil Cuba
  • Strength: Medium

The Davidoff Escurio is a cigar with a stunning appearance. Because they are part of the Black Label line of cigars, the Robusto cigar comes in a tube configuration and looks identical to the Davidoff Nicaragua. Escurio’s moon-like design, which uses Brazil’s colors, sits beneath the iconic Davidoff brand. The wrapper is a milk chocolate color with several veins that distract from the overall elegance. The cigar itself is beautifully made, with a heavier-than-usual weight and a dense foot. Complicated and noisy are often preferable to simple and beautiful.

The Davidoff Robusto has some hay and dirt notes in the cold draw, but they are more in the background than the molasses note, which is front and center The sugary sweet aroma is enticing and unlike anything we’ve seen from Davidoff before. The aroma of the cigar’s foot, before it’s lighted, has the same aromas as the cold draws, with a tinge of spice. The opening notes of the cigar, once lighted, offer a mix of sweetness and spice, which is to be obvious given the cigar’s composition.
