Ashton VSG Robusto Review

Ashton VSG Robusto Review

Launched in 1999, the Ashton Virgin Sun Grown was an instant hit. It was made available in 12 distinctive sizes and shapes. Read this review about the blend and price range before committing to a whole box of Ashton VSG Robusto cigars!

The growing love for fat stocky cigars ensured that Ashton included a Robusto in their line. The Ashton VSG Robusto is a Pajero that measures 5 ½ by 52 ring gauge. It provides 45 minutes to 1 hour of smoking time. This size also provides a slower and cooler burn than the other 11.

The VSG features an oily Ecuadorian wrapper that houses carefully aged Dominican binders and fillers. Notes of earth, cedar, espresso beans, leather, and rich spices dominate the flavor profile.

Ashton VSG Robusto Review

The first striking point as I popped one of these out of my humidor was the smoothness of the stick. Lights from my den caught the oily wrapper and gave a lustrous sheen. The gold, white, red, and black colors of the band with its minimal floral patterns add to its aesthetics.

Short, compact, and stocky, this cigar was wrapped by expert rollers. There was no area of softness as I ran my hand through it. My nostrils get whiffs of coffee beans and smell of damp earth as I take a cold draw.

On lightening the cigar, my first draw was cold and introduced an intense burst of flavor. The spices were very pronounced, nuts, damp earth, and a hint of pepper. The retrohale was smooth with some nutty notes.

On progressing to the central section, spices were at the forefront on a background of wood and espresso coffee. Each puff offers something catchy and scintillating.

The final third of the stogie provided a dominant flavor flanked by short bursts of spiciness. Although the intensity of the cigar is now closing out, the flavors still revolve around a core of coffee, spices, and walnut.

The VSG Robusto treated me to a solid hour of Ashton’s rich experience. The intensity of the cigar hits one from the get-go. The smoke was cold, which allowed for a more paced smoking experience.

The Robusto Ashton Virgin Sun Grown is an excellent cigar. Its complex and well-balanced flavor profile provides a relaxing smoking session. The size gave me a slow and cool burn which provided me with a good smoking pace. You should try this for an evening of relaxation with a bottle of your favorite rum.
