Ashton Classic 898 Cigars Review

By Mariana Heredia
Ashton Classic 898 Cigars Review

In the early 1980s, a Philadelphia cigar retailer dreamed of crafting and owning his cigar brand. Robert Levin employed the services of the Fuente family to accomplish this goal. By 1985, the Ashton Classic was born. It has ruled the scene of premium mild cigars since then. Read this review of the blend and price range before committing to a whole box of Ashton Classic 898 cigars!

The Ashton 898 is a Classic Corona. Like the rest of the line, it spots the Connecticut shade wrapper.  The core is filled with 3 to 5 years old Dominican binders and fillers.

Ashton 898 Cigar Review

On picking up the stick, the golden-blond silky smooth Connecticut Shade leaf was prominent. The cigar is completely matte with no oil sheen. The distinctive white, black, and gold band adds to the allure of the stick. This band blends well with the tiny dark veins I observed on a close look.

Pressure from the head to the foot shows no signs of soft spots. The cigar is perfectly triple-capped. Kudos to the construction. A cold draw revealed flavors of cinnamon, nuts, and cream.

The draw was perfect. The first few puffs reveal creamy and nutty notes; cedar and dark coffee were making entries. In typical Dominican fashion, there are elements of spices. The retro-hale is smooth and slightly cedary.

The middle third is dominated by the nut and cream flavor, with some leather sneaking in. Around the middle, I picked up a little bit of sweet tobacco around the edges of the wrapper. The ash is grey-whitish, and it holds perfectly for about ¾ of an inch.

In the final third, the spice got more pronounced. I also tasted dark coffee notes. The home run presented a carnival of flavors to my palettes with notes of spice, cedar, cinnamon, nuts, and cream. This smoking experience lasted about 1 hour and 10 minutes.

This cigar is best enjoyed on a Saturday morning or at the golf course. It is relaxing and provides a consistent mellow flavor across the whole stick. Buy now!
