La Flor Dominicana (LFD) La Volcada Review

Sequel to winning the #No 1 Cigar of the Year by Cigar Aficionado, LFD Andalusian Bull put the whole brand in the spotlight. People wondered what the master blender, Litto Gomez, the owner of LFD, would craft next. At the 2017 annual IPCPR trade show, La Flor Dominicana (LFD) unveiled another masterpiece, the La Volcada cigar – let’s review it!
La Flor Dominicana La Volcada was another success story. The premium stogies – LFD La Nox, LFD Andalusian Bull, and LFD La Volcada have the same chemistry and were released sequentially. The cigars were related both in naming and the actual content. But, these cigars only became better.
La Volcada means “the dip” and was borrowed from a step in the tango dance, a dance originating from Uruguay, the birthplace of Litto Gomez. LFD described La Volcada as “La Nox on steroids” as its wrapper was borrowed from La Nox binder leaf. Its filler was also from the Andalusian Bull wrapper, an Ecuadorian Corojo.

La Flor Dominicana (LFD) La Volcada Cigar Review
The appearance of La Volcada was pleasing to my eye. Its dark wrapper can be labeled an Oscuro and blended with the black, red, and white-hued band. The band paper was thick and luscious. On it was displayed the imagery of two dancers performing “the dip” of the tango dance. The wrapper was free of blemishes, and a pattern of thin veins beautified its body. The concealed seam lines by the wrapper color and the subtle oily body, more like a dark-roasted coffee bean, add to its overall appeal. The cigar was a Churchill with a vitola of 7×48 inches.
The wrapper was dominated by notes of cedar, barnyard, and leather with musk in the background. The foot, however, had notes of pine and black cherry cola, coffee, and oatmeal raisin, overall being medium. The cold draw brought notes of cranberry, caramel cream, coconut milk, and hickory.
The La Volcada started just like the pre-light draw upon lighting up, without the caramel cream but with dull pepper notes. The flavor became intense going past an inch mark, and notes of earth, nuts, and cinnamon joined the party. Moving towards the end of the first third, fruity syrup was distinct.
The cigar intensity heightens as the smoking progresses, tilting more towards full. The draw was firm. Re-light touchups were needed at this point due to an uneven burn. Notes of hickory, barnyard, leather, and white pepper were showcased in the second third. The stogie became more complex at the final third with more notes of spices, chocolate, and cocoa. However, the strength and flavor remained medium-full till the end of my 2 hours plus smoking session.
Overall Impression
Overall, the look of the cigar was impressive: the band and cigar unified. The cigar lacked almost nothing except for the needed touchups. The flavor profile was also impressive with its fruity syrup and cocoa. However, I wouldn’t recommend this as an everyday smoke due to its full strength. This cigar should be reserved for special moments paired with a cocktail or whisky.
