Davidoff is indeed a Swiss premium brand known for cigars, accessories, and formerly cigarettes. Let’s delve into the fascinating history of the man and the brand he created.
Zino Davidoff: the “King of Cigars”
The brand’s story begins with its Ukrainian-Jewish founder, Zino Davidoff (born Sussele-Meier Davidoff in 1906). His family moved to Geneva, Switzerland, where he took over his father’s tobacco shop in 1926.
Zino became a legendary figure in the cigar world, known for his expertise and sophisticated clientele. His Geneva shop was a global destination for aficionados, earning him the nickname the “King of Cigars.”
After World War II, Zino Davidoff decided to create his own line of cigars. He named the different sizes in this “Château” series after famous Bordeaux wine estates, beginning with the “Château Latour” in 1946.
The birth of the Davidoff brand in Cuba
In 1967, Zino was approached by Cubatabaco, Cuba’s state tobacco monopoly, about creating a line of cigars bearing the Davidoff name. These prestigious cigars were rolled in the newly established El Laguito factory in Havana.
This factory was originally set up to roll Cuban President Fidel Castro’s personal cigars, the legendary Cohíba. In 1968, the first cigars officially carrying the “Davidoff” name were released, including the iconic No. 1, No. 2, and Ambassadrice sizes.
The Modern Era: oettinger Davidoff AG
In 1970, a major shift occurred: Oettinger AG, a family-owned company based in Basel, Switzerland, acquired the rights to the Davidoff brand name. This marked the beginning of Davidoff’s global expansion.
The relationship with Cuba eventually ended, and in 1990, Davidoff famously moved its production to the Dominican Republic. Today, Oettinger Davidoff AG owns the non-cigarette part of the Davidoff tobacco brand.
The Davidoff cigarette brand is separate and was acquired by Imperial Brands in 2006. Oettinger Davidoff AG focuses entirely on premium cigars, pipe tobaccos, and accessories, owning not just Davidoff but also other renowned brands like Camacho and Zino Platinum.
