How to Smoke a Cigar in 4 Steps
By Jesmin BotelloHave you ever wondered how to properly smoke a cigar?
When it comes to how to properly smoke a cigar, there are certain steps one must take. It all seems to be very straightforward, but it’s more complex than it looks. Cigar Country is here to show you how to smoke for the first time with only four steps.
1. Cutting
First things first, you must cut the very tip of the cigar (or the head) a maximum of 1/4 of an inch with a cutter in a quick, sturdy motion to avoid tearing. If a cutter is not available, a knife, scissors, or puncher is also acceptable. We recommend staying away from using your teeth or nails if you want a good clean cut. However, if push comes to shove, bite it! A poorly cut cigar is better than no cigar at all! Brush off the cut area to remove any remains that might go into your mouth.
2. Lighting
One must place the cigar at a 45͏ degree angle in your hand and ‘warm’ up the foot of the cigar with a lighter whilst gently rotating it for an even lit. There are various options as to what to light your cigar with. A torch lighter will work best as it holds fire longer than a match.
3. Smoking
Finally, after ‘warming’ up the cigar for about 30 to 45 seconds, take it to your lips and gently puff (without inhaling) on it while holding a flame to it until you feel the smoke in your mouth. Beware of lighting your hair or eyebrows on fire! We suggest you rotate the cigar while puffing on it to achieve an evenly burning foot. Make sure you light up well as a badly lit cigar will negatively affect your smoking experience and might take a while to correct.
4. Enjoying it!
If you are going to smoke a cigar for the first time, remember that the smoke must never be taken into the lungs (inhaled). Puff, hold it for a few seconds in the mouth, savor it, and then exhale. Think of taking a sip of water without swallowing and then slowly spitting it out. A lit premium cigar should not be put out, simply let it rest in an ashtray and it will go out by itself. Also, be mindful of your ash. You don’t have to flick the cigar constantly to drop ash, just remember to do it every 3/4″-1″ before it falls on you.
A cigar is meant to be enjoyed with time so choose your cigar accordingly considering the time you have available. Please don’t rush the cigar. Sit back and savor in a relaxed setting in the company of your favorite drink and good friends.
Remember to draw the smoke into your palate, swish it around and release it. Don’t forget to appreciate the wonderful aroma in the smoke.
