Zino Davidoff (born Sussele-Meier Davidoff; 1906, Novhorod-Siverskyi – 1994, Geneva) founded the company and maintained a smoking specialty store in Geneva, Switzerland, between 1926 and 1994. The “Lord of Cigarettes” was his moniker. So how do you pronounce Davidoff? The American pronunciation of Davidoff is “dah·vi·dohf.”

Oettinger Davidoff AG makes a wide variety of cigarettes, cigars, piping cigars, and cigarette smoke accessories under the labels Davidoff, Camacho, and Zino Platinum. Cigarettes are created in the Dominican Republic and Honduras with tobacco sourced from Nicaragua, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, and the United States. 

Zino Davidoff wanted to obtain a permit to manufacture his line of cigarettes after WWII. He titled the different styles of this “valued and cared” cigarette collection after prominent Bordeaux vintage properties because he had a discriminating international clientele. The “Castle Dumont” was the primary in the series, released in 1946.

Cubatabaco, Cuba’s official nicotine company, contacted Zino Davidoff in 1967 about establishing a brand of cigarettes with the “Davidoff” trademark. The cigarettes were made at the El Laguito plant in Havana, built initially to make Cuban leader Fidel Castro’s private cigarettes, known as Cohiba.

The first cigarettes bearing the nomenclature “Davidoff” were launched in 1968. The Number 1, Number 2, and Ambassadrice were the initial designs. The Davidoff brand was purchased by Oettinger AG, based in Basel, Switzerland, in 1970.

The Davidoff “Tiny Cigarillos” were introduced in 1971, followed by the original Davidoff tube cigars in 1972. The cigarettes of the Castle line have been presented in Davidoff-branded boxes since 1975. The “Vingt Collection” and the “Fort Pérignon” cigars, both titled after the cognac, were introduced in 1976 and 1977, respectively. To commemorate Zino Davidoff’s 80th anniversary, a limited edition of “Aniversario” cigarettes was released in 1986.

In 1980, the Zino Davidoff Band was established to offer quasi-luxury products such as timepieces, leather products, pencils, perfumes, eyeglasses, espresso, and brandy. According to global health academics, this was done to participate in brand diversity (also called “brand extending”) to market tobacco and alcohol, enabling branding amid limits on the explicit smoking promotion of products.

Zino Davidoff and Cubatabaco parted company after multiple disagreements over product and intellectual rights. Before all this, in August 1989, Zino dramatically burnt approximately 100,000 cigarettes that he regarded to be of poor quality and unsuitable for sale. As a result, in 1991, all Davidoff manufactured goods manufactured in Cuba were permanently ceased.
