Connecticut Broadleaf Wrapper Cigars

Connecticut Broadleaf wrappers are the wilder cousins of the refined Connecticut Shade, also grown in the Connecticut River Valley. The tobacco was once cast away and used primarily as binders and fillers. But nowadays, this thick, oily wrapper has found a new home on the body of many Maduro cigars. Connecticut Broadleaf is grown in direct sunlight. The plant is bushy and squat. They grow broad, thick leaves —some are two and a half feet long, with big veins coursing through them, hence the name.

During harvest, broadleafs are “stalk cut,” meaning the whole plant gets harvested at a time. This plant is quite difficult to work with, and only about 60 percent of the plant is usable in producing this priced cigar wrapper. The aging is mostly left to nature, but the selection of the leaves is a tedious process that sometimes drives up the price. The broadleaf has a heavy, muscular flavor. When you smoke a cigar wrapped in broadleaf, you'll taste minerals, leather, and steel. It is not subtle. However, to seasoned cigar smokers, it is often described as having the best flavor of all cigar wrappers. Most Maduro cigars are wrapped with Connecticut Broadleaf. It wraps cigars like La Aurora Preferidos 1903 Edition Broadleaf, ACID Plush Robusto, Ashton Aged Maduro, and Arturo Fuente Anejo, to mention a few.
