Cameroon Wrapper Cigars

The word Cameroon refers to cigars with a tobacco wrapper grown in the Central African nations of Cameroon and the Central African Republic. They are grown from Sumatra-seed tobacco introduced to the local farmers by Dutch colonists in the early 1900s. The tobacco is sun-grown, unlike other wrappers like Cuban and Connecticut leaves that are grown underneath tapados. The Central African climate is tropical and generally more stable than these areas. There are usually clouds that act as a natural sun-ray filter for the tobacco. This produces a uniform texture and color to the leaves. Central Africa has some of the best dark brown wrappers outside of Cuba.

African Cameroon wrappers are the toothiest of all tobacco wrapper variants. Tooths are pockets of oil that are formed on some types of tobacco. They resemble little goosebumps on the leaf and harbor flavors that cigar smokers love. Cameroon wrappers are also known for their strong taste, especially compared to San Andrés or Ecuador Habano. These wrappers produce large amounts of flavor without excessive levels of intensity. Tasting notes of cinnamon, cedar, baking sodas, and nuts are characteristic of these wrappers. There is also an accompanying balance of sweetness and pepper. Many premium cigar brands use Cameroon wrappers in their lands. Some of the most renowned blends are La Flor Dominicana Cameroon Cabinet, H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon, and NUB Cameroon.
