Humidification accessories for your cigar humidor are incredibly important. Some things just get better with time, wine, rum, and good cigars. As premium cigars are aged before hand-rolling, it is also required after packaging to prevent the cigars from drying out and improve their flavor profiles. The aging process is achieved through proper cigar storage, which should be in a humidor. Humidors keep the cigars in the right temperature and moisture, but they are just pieces of wood made from solid cedar without proper humidification. Humidors' accessories are needed to make them functional. For your humidors to be complete, you need humidifiers or humidification units, hygrometers, and humidity solutions.
Humidifiers create the proper moisturizing condition that prevents your cigars from drying out. There are five main types; crystal gels, humidipaks or humidity pouches, silica beads, floral foams, and electrical humidifiers. Humidipaks are the most popular, and Boveda packs are the most common humidor accessories. They contain salt and water in a semi-permeable membrane that allows controlled humidity at predetermined levels of 65%, 69%, 72%, and 75% RH. Hygrometers are essential while setting up your humidors and for their maintenance. Like the hygrometers used for measuring the weather humidity, they measure the moisture of your humidors. There are two types - analog and digital hygrometers. You would want your hygrometers to read 75% to 80% RH ideally. Humidity solutions maintain and stabilize the desired relative humidity of your humidors at 65% to 70% RH. They contain 50% propylene glycerol solution and 50% distilled water. They are often called 50/50 solutions. Xikar humidification solution is a type that provides 70% RH.
