What is a Cigar Humidor? A Complete Beginner’s Guide

If you’ve started to invest in premium cigars, you’ve likely heard the word “humidor.” But what is a humidor, and do you really need one? Proper cigar storage is vital, as it directly affects a cigar’s flavor, condition, and lifespan.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know, from why a humidor is essential to how to set one up and use it correctly.

So, What exactly is a Humidor?

A humidor is a storage container—often an elegant wooden box but sometimes as large as a room—designed to maintain a constant, ideal level of humidity. Its main feature is a tight seal to maintain the desired environment inside.

For any cigars you plan to store for longer than a few days, a humidor is an absolute must-have. While it may seem complex, it’s actually a cigar aficionado’s best friend, helping to keep your collection at the peak of flavor for months or even years.

Why do you need a humidor?

Cigars are natural products that rely deeply on specific temperature and moisture levels to stay in top condition. If exposed to overly dry, hot, cold, or excessively humid conditions, your prized stogie will quickly lose its essential oils and intended flavor.

When cigars are too dry, they lose their alluring aroma and taste. Conversely, extreme humidity can lead to mold and even tobacco beetles. A humidor is the only tool that creates the perfect, stable environment to protect your cigars and even allow them to age gracefully.

3 essential how-to’s for your humidor

How a humidor works: the 3 key elements

A fine humidor is more than just a box. It has three key components working together to provide perfect climate control.

  1. 1 – The Humidification System: This is the heart of the humidor. Its job is to add moisture to the environment, keeping the cigars plump so they burn slowly and evenly. It also helps them retain the essential oils that contribute to their aroma and flavor.
  2. 2 – The Hygrometer: This is the gauge that measures the humidity level inside the box. It lets you know if you need to add moisture or absorb any excess. It is the humidor’s dashboard.
  3. 3 – The Thermometer: This measures the temperature conditions inside. It’s recommended to keep cigars at a cool and steady temperature of roughly 70°F (21°C) to prevent the hatching of tobacco beetle eggs.

How to set up your new humidor (seasoning)

Before you can use your new humidor, you must “season” it. This crucial step prepares the Spanish cedar interior by raising its moisture level so it doesn’t dry out your cigars.

  1. 1 – Calibrate your hygrometer: before seasoning, ensure your hygrometer is accurate using a Boveda calibration kit or the salt test method.
  2. 2 – Season the wood: the easiest and safest method is to use an 84% RH Boveda seasoning pack. Place the correct number of packs inside the empty humidor and close the lid.
  3. 3 – Wait: leave the seasoning packs inside for a full 14 days. Do not open the humidor during this time.
  4. 4 – Final Step: after two weeks, remove the seasoning packs and place your regular 69% or 72% Boveda packs inside along with your cigars. Your humidor is now perfectly prepared.

How to use and maintain your humidor

Once your humidor is set up, maintenance is simple. Remember to pay close attention to your hygrometer to ensure conditions are stable. Check your hygrometer every two weeks to ensure the humidity is steady at your desired level (typically 65-72% RH). If you’re using a traditional humidification device, only use distilled water to recharge it. Most importantly, don’t hide your cigars away forever—a well-maintained collection is meant to be admired, smoked, and shared!
