How to Smoke a Cigar: A Beginner’s Guide in 5 Easy Steps

Have you ever wondered how to properly smoke a cigar? While it may seem straightforward, there is a rewarding art to it. To get the most from the experience, certain steps must be taken. It’s more complex than it looks, but it’s easy to learn. Cigar Country is here to show you how to smoke a cigar for the first time with this simple guide

Exploring the Main Cigar Wrapper Types

Step 1: Choosing Your First Cigar

Before you can cut or light a cigar, the journey begins with selecting the right one. For your first experience, it’s crucial to choose a cigar that is described as Mild in strength to avoid being overwhelmed. We highly recommend starting with a Robusto size, which is typically around 5 inches long. This shape is not too long, making it a manageable time commitment, while still being thick enough to offer a full flavor experience and stay cool.

Step 2: Cutting the Cigar

Next, you must cut the very tip of the cigar’s head (the closed end). The goal is to create a clean opening for a smooth draw without damaging the cigar’s structure.Using a sharp guillotine cutter, make a quick, sturdy motion to slice off a maximum of 1/4 of an inch. After the cut, gently brush off any loose tobacco from the area.

Step 3: Lighting the Cigar

Properly lighting a cigar is a two-part process. For the best results, use a torch lighter, as it provides a clean, odorless flame. First, “toast” the foot (the open end) by holding the cigar at a 45-degree angle and rotating it near the flame without them touching. Once the entire foot is evenly charred, you’re ready to light.

Step 4: Smoking the Cigar (Puffing, Not Inhaling)

After toasting the foot for about 30 seconds, bring the cigar to your lips. While holding the flame near the foot, puff gently and rotate the cigar until you feel the smoke in your mouth.Remember, the most important rule is to never inhale the smoke into your lungs. Simply draw the smoke into your mouth, hold it for a few seconds to savor the flavor, and then slowly exhale.

 Step 5: Enjoying the Experience

A premium cigar is meant to be enjoyed slowly, so sit back, relax, and never rush the process. You don’t need to constantly flick the ash; a quality cigar will hold a solid ash of about an inch. When you are finished, don’t stub it out like a cigarette. Simply let the cigar rest in an ashtray, and it will extinguish itself gracefully. The key is to savor the flavor, the aroma, and the moment.

Good to Know for Your First Smoke

How often should I puff on the cigar?

A cigar is all about relaxation, so the pace is slow. A good rule of thumb is to take one gentle puff every 30 to 60 seconds. This is just enough to keep the cigar lit without causing it to overheat. Puffing too frequently makes the tobacco burn hot, which can create a harsh, bitter taste.

What happens if my cigar goes out while I’m smoking?

Don’t worry, this is very common and happens to everyone. First, gently tap any loose ash off the end of the cigar. Before relighting, it’s a good practice to gently blow out through the cigar for a second to purge any stale smoke. Then, simply relight it as you did the first time.

Should I take the band off the cigar before, during, or after smoking?

The best time to remove the band is after you’ve been smoking for about 10-15 minutes. The heat from the cigar will warm and loosen the vegetable-based glue used on the band, allowing it to slide off easily without tearing the delicate wrapper. If you try to remove it when the cigar is cold, you risk damaging it.

How do I know when the cigar is finished?

A general rule of thumb is to smoke a cigar until about two or three finger-widths remain. This last section, often called the ‘nub,’ can become hot and cause the flavors to turn bitter if smoked too far down. When you’ve reached that point, simply let the cigar rest in an ashtray, and it will go out on its own.
