How to Season a Humidor: A Step-by-Step Guide for New Cigar Owners
3 min read
You just invested in a box of premium handmade cigars. Maybe they arrived via our factory-direct freshness shipping, smelling of rich tobacco and perfectly pliable. You also bought a beautiful new wooden box to store them.
Excited, you put the cigars directly into the new box. Stop.
If you do this, you might ruin your cigars within days.
A new humidor is essentially a “thirsty” dry box. The interior wood needs to be hydrated before it can protect your cigars. This process is called seasoning.
Whether you just bought a desktop chateau 20 ct humidor, a massive humidor cabinet, or a portable mini cigar humidor, the rule is the same: season it first, store second.
Here is your fail-proof guide on how to season a humidor correctly in 2026.
The Science: What is the “Humidor Meaning”?
To understand why seasoning is non-negotiable, we need to define the meaning of humidor. It is not just a fancy box; it is a micro-climate ecosystem.
Most quality humidors are lined with Spanish Cedar. This wood is chosen for a specific reason: it holds humidity exceptionally well and repels tobacco beetles. However, when a humidor comes fresh from the factory, that wood is kiln-dried. It has near-zero moisture content.
If you place your humidified cigars inside a dry box, the wood will act like a sponge. It will aggressively suck the moisture out of your cigars to reach equilibrium. The result? Dry, cracked wrappers and a harsh smoking experience.
The Tools You Need
Before you start, gather these supplies. Do not cut corners here.
- Distilled Water: Never use tap water. Tap water contains minerals and chlorine that will leave white dust deposits or, worse, create mold on your wood.
- A Clean Sponge or Cloth: Unused and chemical-free.
- Hygrometer: To measure the humidity.
- Humidification Source: Ideally Boveda packs for cigars (specifically the 84% Seasoning packs) or a traditional propylene glycol solution.
(Note: While some people use a crane humidifier for the room, that controls the ambient air, not the internal micro-climate of the box. You still need to season the wood itself.)
Method 1: The Boveda Method (The Easiest & Safest)
If you are not in a rush, this is the method we recommend at Cigar Country. It requires zero labor and eliminates human error.
- Empty the Box: Ensure the humidor is empty.
- Insert the Packs: Place Boveda 84% Seasoning Packs inside. Use one pack for every 25 cigars the humidor can hold (e.g., a 50-count humidor needs two packs).
- Close and Wait: Shut the lid. Do not open it.
- The Waiting Game: Leave it alone for 14 days. Yes, two full weeks.
- Swap: After 14 days, remove the seasoning packs. Replace them with your standard maintenance packs (usually 69% or 72%) and your cigars.
Method 2: The Wipe-Down Method (The Traditional Way)
If you are impatient and want to use your custom humidor box sooner, you can use the wipe-down method. Be warned: if you use too much water, you can warp the wood.
- Dampen the Sponge: Soak your sponge in distilled water and wring it out completely. It should be damp, not dripping.
- Wipe the Interior: Gently wipe down all exposed cedar—the lid, the bottom, and the trays. Do not leave puddles. You just want to darken the wood slightly.
- The Shot Glass Trick: Place a small shot glass filled with distilled water in the center of the humidor.
- Close and Wait: Close the lid and let it sit for 24 to 48 hours.
- Check the Hygrometer: Ideally, the humidity should read around 80% or higher.
- Stabilize: Remove the shot glass. Add your standard humidification device. Wait for the humidity to drop to roughly 70%. Once stable, add your cigars.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
“My humidity is stuck at 60%”
If you seasoned the box but the humidity drops rapidly, you likely have a leak.
- The Dollar Bill Test: Open the lid, place a dollar bill halfway in, and close the lid. Try to pull the bill out. If it slides out easily, the seal is bad.
- Solution: Check the hinges or consider using a cigar case or Tupperware (tupperdor) temporarily while you fix the seal.
“Can I season a plastic travel humidor?”
If you have a plastic mini cigar humidor (often used for golf or travel), you do not need to wipe it down. Plastic does not absorb moisture. Just add your Boveda pack and cigars, and you are ready to go.
“What about my large Cabinet?”
If you bought a piece of furniture like a humidor cabinet, the wipe-down method can be tedious. We highly recommend using an electronic humidification device or a large quantity of Boveda 84% packs to do the heavy lifting over two weeks.
A Note on “Factory-Direct Freshness”
We take pride in our shipping process. Ensure every box leaving the Dominican Republic is perfectly humidified. We even include Boveda packs in transit to maintain that condition.
However, once that package arrives at your door, the responsibility shifts to you. A properly seasoned humidor is the insurance policy for your investment.
Whether you are storing a prized box of Arturo Fuente or a daily bundle, treat your storage with respect. If you care for your humidor, it will care for your cigars for decades.
