What is the LFD TAA Oro Cigar?

By Connor
What is the LFD TAA Oro Cigar?

In 2012, the Tobacconist Association of America (TAA) agreed to an exclusive release plan with La Flor Dominicana (LFD) and the Oro blend. This is in keeping with the TAA’s tradition of releasing exclusive series of cigars sold at TAA member retailers.

With 2018 being the TAA’s 50th anniversary, it was no surprise that LFD was also invited to the party. For the golden anniversary, La Flor Dominicana decided to pay homage to one of their famous lines of cigars, the Oro —Spanish for Golden. Hence, the La Flor Dominicana TAA Oro cigar was born. These are the key features that make the Oro cigar stand out amongst LFD offerings.

LFD TAA Oro

  • Country of Origin: Dominican Republic
  • Wrapper: Nicaraguan
  • Filler: Dominican
  • Binder: Dominican
  • Factory: Tabacalera La Flor
  • Figurado: Torpedo box pressed
  • Size: 6 ½ inches
  • Ring gauge: 54
  • Strength: Medium
  • Flavor: Medium to full

Appearance

La Flor Dominicana (LFD) TAA Oro spots a medium brown color, thanks to its Nicaraguan wrapper. The surface of the wrapper is somewhat oily, but far from the sheen of the Ecuadorian wrapper. There are only a few thin visible wrapper seams. It has a trunk-style box press with the torpedo figurado shape giving it a sharp taper at the head.

There are two bands on each cigar. The primary is the familiar gold-colored version of the LFD logo. Below the logo in a white font is the insignia, “La Flor Dominicana.” Below which there is “Oro,” also in a white font. The secondary band is a gold wrap-around with the 50th-anniversary logo of TAA. The secondary band is finished with black trim.

Taste And Performance

After smoking one of these, I see myself in the perfect position to write on the taste and performance. The key flavors I loved were cedar, nut, natural tobacco, wood, hay, and pepper. What’s a Dominican cigar without the characteristic nut and pepper?

A cold draw delivered a mix of natural tobacco, nuts, earth, and cedar. The burn had a fairly jagged char line and required a few touch-ups to keep it straight and true. The draw was perfect as it delivered clouds of rich tobacco to my palate. The strength was as described by LFD, it was medium, swinging towards the full-bodied class towards the middle of the second third. However, the cigar was not bitter or overbearing at any point in time.

La Flor Dominicana TAA Oro is an enjoyable and flavorful cigar that ranks high in major categories— flavor and construction. I will recommend this to any enthusiast to have in his collection. If you are an adventurous novice who wants something in the medium plus range, you can also try your hands on this cigar.
