Davidoff Escurio Review & Price RangeBy Mariana Heredia
Davidoff stunned the cigar market when they released their first-ever Nicaraguan puro in 2013. The cigar signaled a shift in the company’s direction, with a new black interpretation of the classic Davidoff band to complement the robust Nicaraguan tobaccos. But it looks like Davidoff has grander intentions for the “Black Label” line since the brand recently introduced Davidoff Escurio, a new worldly blend inspired by the vivid, rhythmic ambiance of Rio de Janeiro. From its Brazilian blend (albeit not a puro) to its black & emerald packaging (inspired by Rio’s “emerald coast” after dark) to its Brazilian-hybrid name—escuro+Rio (escuro is Portuguese for “dark”), this is where the cigar takes on its personality. The Davidoff Black Label appears to be the ideal platform for the company to experiment with new and foreign tobaccos, but how will this Brazilian infusion stack up against Nicaragua’s massive success? This review will look into the Davidoff Escurio blend and price range.

This is an excellent blend on paper, with a diversified filler from Brazil and the Dominican Republic, including the sweet Meta Fina commonly seen in Brazilian cigars, as well as the fiery Cubra, a Brazilian-grown Cuban Criollo tobacco. There are, of course, Davidoff’s hallmark DR tobaccos for elegance, as well as a lovely Ecuadorian Habano wrapper that seems to bring out the best in any combination.
The Escurio is about as wonderful a cigar as you can imagine when you hold it. The seams are barely visible, the wrapper is smooth and shiny, and the roll is firm throughout. The orange color of the wrapper contrasts wonderfully with the lime-green Escurio half-moon emblem.
You’ll note right away that the draw is ideal; it’s easy but not too easy, with just enough resistance to make you feel like you’re progressing. There’s plenty of smoke on each puff, so there’s no need to puff twice or three times—one smooth draw will provide all the smoke you need. To begin, the flavors are delicate; there is no jolt to knock you out of your seat; it’s smooth and polished. However, despite the increasing spiciness, a chili chocolate spice forms in the retrohale—the texture is silky and seems effortless out the nose. Mineral, leather, a subtle tanginess, and a distinct citrus note emerge quickly.
The flavors report come alive in the second third. The citrus from earlier becomes more prominent, taking on a lime and pineapple flavor! The finish is lengthy and creamy, with vanilla and nougat pudding notes—in combination with the citrus, I’m reminded of a key lime pie with whipped cream! As you move farther into this third, you’ll notice beautiful, balanced coffee notes, perhaps even Brazilian… Brazilian coffee, for example, is noted for its brilliant flavors of sweet, fruity acidity and a clean palate, which is very similar to the smoking experience you’ll discover here.
