Ashton Aged Maduro Cigars Review

Ashton Aged Maduro Cigars Review

For over 30 years, Ashton has been a dominant force in the cigar industry. The brand is built on the back of their premium hand-rolled cigars made on the famous Fuente farm. The quality, construction, and flavor profile are well revered. The Ashton Aged Maduro cigar has been a part of this history for over a decade – let’s review it!

The Ashton Aged Maduro made its debut in 2012 as a limited production cigar because of its wrapper leaf. The wrapper is from a Connecticut broad-life that is naturally aged and fermented for three years. This is paired with binders and long-fillers grown, harvested, and aged on the Fuente farm, culminating in one of the respected pieces in the Maduro lines.

Ashton Aged Maduro Cigar Review

I treated myself to a No 40, Ashton Aged Maduro, 6 inches by 50 ring gauge. On removal from the plastic sleeve, the dark chocolate brown shines off. The oiliness accentuates the dark veins scattered over the cigar, giving it a rough macho look.

Overall, the cigar is solid; with a squeeze-through that shows no soft spot. Clipping the cap revealed aromas of cocoa, earth, and barnyard. A cold draw adds elements of spice and nuts to the original party of flavors.

Upon roasting and lightening up the cigar, it produced an excellent draw. The first few puffs confirm the notes of earth, cocoa, almond, and dark chocolate with hints of black pepper. The retro-hale is smooth, and I deeply encourage it.

As the cigar progresses to the second third, my palate is awash with espresso, nuts, cocoa, and spice notes. There is also a lingering sweetness at the back of my tongue that seems destined to stay. At this point, the burn line is thin, but even; the ash also holds perfectly.

In the home stretch of the final third, the notes become darker and more interwoven. At one point, I was unable to pick out specific notes. Ashton has been blamed a few times for having some bland blends. This is not the case for the aged Maduro. It boasts of a complex aromatic flavor. The nuts and cocoa flavors did win the battle. Marinating my palates as I finish off the cigar. This session took about an hour and fifteen minutes.

The aged Maduro delivered a wonderful smoking experience. It boasts a complex flavor profile without being too strong or bitter. Also, It is a great step up for those who are getting tired of the mildness of the cabinet and classic Ashton lines. Enthusiasts already know to keep a box of aged Maduro handy because smoking them is a time well spent.
